kilowatt ours

went to a sneak peak screening of this documentary film last night and had some time to brainstorm and network with other community greens who seem to be popping out of the woodwork! looks like all is in the works for a big premiere of it sometime in early February, so keep you fingers crossed that all goes well.

a class that i am signed up for in the spring is in danger of being cancelled (no, it's not my thesis or my independent study, sillies!!). there's a good (well, not really) story about this. so, i asked one of my other spanish teachers if i could make an announcement about the class (ahem to her SPANISH class that i am *obviously* currently enrolled in) and she said NO. that's right, you read correctly, a big fat no. she said claims that her reasoning is as follows: neither class (there are two about to be cancelled) by this other teacher are regularly catalogued class. why that makes any difference whatsoever i cannot even begin to comprehend (despite the fact that it is incorrect, the catalogue allows for special topics courses and the spanish-american theatre class). she must think i am an idiot to fall for such a stupid reason. i didn't question it to her face however, but the wheels we turning for the remained of the class and this is my conclusion: she is a mean, mean, spitefully mean lady. and i think dr. hall the department head might be interested in hearing how this teacher refuses to support her colleagues. i think this behaviour is ridiculous and i can't understand why anyone would have cause to be so unsupportive of his/her own department whose goals as a department should be held by all. okay, that's my spiel. still reeling...

today, i got out of bed at 5 a.m. which was excessively early for me (prollie not for any of you working people, though) in order to get ready for a conference with my favorite person, mr. joe rice, and then i chatted with maria costa about the next step in our research project. does anyone know the basics of qualitative data analysis? that's my goal to work on for the next little while. brush up on how to conduct a good and useful survey.

in an hour or so i will be heading to Sitar to gorge myself on Indian food (it was Jewel's suggesting this morning). and, because it is so cold (i am inside and wearing the following items: underwear, biking shorts, long john bottoms, jeans, two pairs of socks, two shirts, a hooded fleece (yes, the hood is up), scarf, and my winter jacket!) i think that a LARGE amount of spicy Indian food sounds good. And, I just get soooooo hungry when I wake up early, early.

my dad visited jc on monday and we had an absolutely fabulous meal at sushi blues. we stayed up talking from around 6 until 10 and didn't even notice the time! i love it when that happens.
we also played with the computers at the honors house and looked for different combinations of flights for the holidays. my dad ended up purchasing three one way tickets--from knoxville to tampa, tampa to chicago, and chicago to knoxville. i found this cheap airline: independence air and we were all excited that all tickets were $307 total which is a steal for holiday travel, let me tell you (many of the options that we looked at were over three hundred for a one way). anyways, independence air runs through d.c. so i get to transfer planes there rather than in atlanta (yes!!) d.c. is so much better. you should try it.

grr... my tummy* is already rumbling and its only 10:30!

*i found out in linguistics the other day that this is a word modification produced by many children who, through the normal process of language acquisition, reduce consonant clusters. thus ccv "sto-" becomes cv "to-" (i apologize, but i can't represent with apa on this computer). the "m" gets repeated because of some process (don't recall the name, maybe it was assimilation) where one sound influences another... i'll stop here because the rest of the modification is not coming to mind. ANYWAYS, it was a child's word that then became a part of our language and that's cool.
